Auckland Council is encouraging people to have their say on a new draft policy, which proposes how community funding should be allocated across the region.

The draft Community Funding Policy is now available for public feedback until 5pm Friday 18 May.

The draft policy proposes a new, consistent way to allocate funding to ensure all groups are treated the same across the region.

It also proposes that funding is allocated based on the outcomes of a group’s proposed activities and their impact on the community, and how it links to key council strategic documents, such as local board plans and the Auckland Plan.

The region’s former councils had a range of policies and schemes for community funding, but they are all different.

Councillor Ann Hartley, Auckland Council’s Regional Development and Operations Committee chair, says the new draft policy ensure consistency and transparency across the region.

“This policy aims is to create common arrangements across the region that are simple, transparent and fair to all Auckland community groups,” she says.

“We encourage the community to have their say on this draft policy; their feedback will be considered when the final polices are developed.”

Auckland Council is required to streamline and simplify all the policies and bylaws adopted by the former councils by 2015.

Auckland Councilis required to streamline and simplify all the policies and bylaws adopted by the former councils by 2015. Once adopted, the new Community Funding Policy will take effect on 1 July 2012.

Appointallows not for profit organisations seeking directors or trustees to easily connect with individuals wanting to share their governance experience. They also support organisations requiring advice on how to create, recruit and develop better boards.

Here’s why we came into being…

We want New Zealand to be an enviable place to live and work. To achieve this we need our commercial and social enterprises to be robust, vibrant and ambitious. Strong governance, through better boards, is key to making this happen.

appoint allows organisations seeking directors to easily connect with individuals wanting to share their governance experience. We also support organisations requiring advice on how to create and recruit better boards.

We have strong principles around:

Diversity – we believe that diverse boards are better boards and we strive to ensure our pool of potential directors reflects the make up of our community.

Transparency – we believe it’s in an organisation’s best interest to promote its governance roles to a broad pool of potential directors.

Community – we are passionate about Aotearoa and helping our country succeed through stronger business and social enterprises.

appoint is privileged to have the support of Sport New Zealand and Grant Thornton as Foundation Partners.

For more information about Appoint and how they can assist, please go to www.appointbetterboards.co.nz

League legend Steve Price swapped the footy field for the race track today and horsed around with brave cancer-battlers.

To launch Child Cancer Appeal Month, the former Warrior met with some of the children he will support through the Steve Price Night of Courage fundraising event this Friday at Alexandra Park, and took them for a spin around the tracks on miniature sulkies and ponies.

The 38-year-old, who has already raised $40,000 toward this year’s appeal, said being part of the charity was his “little passion”.

“I speak at schools all the time and I tell the kids that they have choices. They have the choice to stay in school, to make something out of life. With these kids, they don’t have choices,” he said.

“This is a chance for them to have a bit of fun and we’re going to have a ball. It’s excellent. These kids, they don’t whinge, they don’t moan, they’re very tough. It blows me away. The things they go through are just unbelievable.”

Price, who is based in Auckland, said child cancer was an important cause as three children a week are diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand.

He has also enlisted the help of a few famous faces to raise funds ahead of the Friday night’s fundraising event.

All Black Jerome Kaino, Megan Alatini, Breakers general manager Richard Clarke, Radio Sport’s D’Arcy Waldegrave, along with some of the trainers and riders at Alexandra Park and some of the parents involved, will lop off their locks
in an effort to raise funds.

Kaino, who will play in the Blues’ second Super Rugby match on Friday night, will shave his head the night before.

“What I wanted was a real diverse group of people to get together and shave their heads. And I wanted a lady,” Price said.

“I know Megan through a friend and she was right into it. It’s been unreal. For females, hair is very important and because it’s a huge sacrifice, doing it means something and she’s really passionate about it.”

The night will also feature an auction where 100 per cent of the money raised will go to charity.

“I hate going to those auctions where, say a framed picture of Michael Jordan is at $900 reserve, and once it reaches $950, only $50 will go toward the charity,” said Price.

To support the Child Cancer Appeal, make a donation online or you can text BEAD to 206 to make a donation

On Tuesday 8 May 2012, Bank of New Zealand will be closing its doors ‘for good’ for the third time to help out communities across New Zealand for one day. In 2009 and 2011 the volunteers were BNZ staff, but this year they are asking members of the New Zealand Public to get involved and lend a hand on community projects.

In order to place approximately 8,000 volunteers, Closed for Good needs as many projects as possible. They can help out on anything you have that needs doing, particularly large-scale projects and projects requiring business-related skills.

If you have a project that needs volunteers you can easily register it by visiting www.closedforgood.org. All submissions should outline what the project involves, how many people are needed for the day’s work, objectives of the day, what you need the volunteers to do and how your project will benefit the community.

Key Dates

17 Feb – 16 March: Projects can be submitted on www.closedforgood.org

By 23 March: Community organisations will know if their project has been accepted.

2 April – 23 April: Volunteers will be able to select projects. Projects are not guaranteed to go ahead until after 23 April 2012, when minimum numbers have been met and volunteers have been assigned. The Project Leaders will then be in touch to do a project site visit to finalise details.

8 May: Closed for Good

For any questions, please contact the Closed for Good team via email on closedforgood@bnz.co.nz or 0800 275 269.

One of the many questions I am asked is “I’m not sure where to start looking for work or how to get a visa”. There is no doubt that relocating to a new country would be a daunting task. Many traditional recruitment agencies do not cater for people seeking a work Visa or have the knowledge to advise new immigrants on the ‘who, what and how’ of relocation.

The first website I recommend is the Immigration New Zealand site. This site has a wealth of information and is a fantastic starting point. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ Here you will find information around the skilled migrant categories, visas and general information about New Zealand.

If you would like to get a feel for our job scene – the two biggest job boards are www.seek.co.nz and www.trademejobs.co.nz. Another fantastic site is our government job board Careers NZ http://www.careers.govt.nz/ here you will find plenty of good information around job hunting tips and how to approach the NZ market.

Of course speaking with agencies like Talent Capital will also prove advantagous, so pick up the phone, turn on the internet and get moving!
